Rock Climbing in Cuba

Cuba is very different from anything else, it’s special and we love it. There’s a lot of things that are not very well in this country, but climbing is good. Right location to treat yourself is Valle de Viñales in the western, mountainous province of Pinar del Río. Overhanging limestone faces on 1,000-foot freestanding crags called “mogotes” rise above traditional thatch-roofed Cuban houses, red-soiled farms, and verdant palms and pines. Limestone is more or less same as in Krabi, Thailand. It is like sandpaper.

Most of the routes are done by Hannibal, a local crazy guy with blond dreadlocks. Quite recognizable in Cuba? He’s a amazing climber and nice person who loves to guide all the visitors. He is likely to become your nightlife guide as well. There’s 2 or 3 bars in the village and he is propably hanging out in one of them whenever he’s around.

We made one major mistake during the climbing trip and it is the typical one among westerners – too little time! There are so many awesome routes with spectacular view and the best of all is the tranquility of the place. Gotta go back some day!
