Mere Theory

Mere Theory
Adelaide, Australia – Rock/ Progressive

Mere Theory is a rock band based in Adelaide, Australia. Its creative force is guitarist Nigel Black and the songs tend to be based around his inventive, rhythmic guitar riffs. The edgier guitars juxtapose beautifully with Chris Mellow’s exhilarating vocals, while Nigel’s lyrics complete what is a highly emotive effect. The rhythm section of Richie Wise and Ross Simpson are able to demonstrate their considerable ability without undermining the music, which is an area where many aspiring exponents of this kind of progressive rock fall down.

In 2007, Mere Theory released their debut album, Catalan Atlas, to critical acclaim. Many of the tracks, including the stand out Stand Up and Breathe Take This Vaccine can be found on the band’s Myspace site.

The second album is due for release in July of this year. Two preview tracks are available on their Bandcamp site, one of which, Break Through can also be found, complete with roller derby video, on Youtube. The other preview track, Remedy (Is You) is a song that suggests that the band have matured since the first album. This textured song features ultimately uplifting lyrics offset against melancholy music.

An accomplished live act, Mere Theory have performed at Australia’s best known festival, Big Day Out, on two occasions and in 2006 the band were recipients of the Australasian Performing Rights Association’s Emily Burrows Award – a prize awarded to emerging Australian bands who show exceptional promise.

Band members: Nigel Black (Guitar& Vocals), Chris Mellow (Vocals), Ross Simpson (Bass), Richie Wise (Drums)
